Palestinian Islamic Jihad Backs Hamas Response to US Gaza Plan.

GAZA: Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a close ally of Hamas that also holds Israeli hostages, announced its support for Hamas’s reaction to a U.S. peace proposal aimed at ending the ongoing Gaza conflict. This joint stance could potentially pave the way for the release of captives held by both groups.

“The response from Hamas to Trump’s proposal reflects the stance of Palestinian resistance groups, and the Islamic Jihad took part responsibly in the discussions that resulted in this decision,” stated the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Although smaller than Hamas, the faction is considered more hardline and has long been backed by Iran.

Hamas Response to US Proposal

On Friday, Hamas agreed to some essential aspects of U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan. The proposal includes a ceasefire, withdrawal of Israeli forces, and an exchange involving the release of Israeli hostages along with Palestinian detainees.

This acceptance, now reinforced by Islamic Jihad’s backing, may bring new hope for civilians in Gaza who have endured years of war, displacement, and humanitarian crises under continuous Israeli bombardment.

Voices from Gaza

For many Palestinians, the announcement was seen as a rare moment of optimism.
“It’s joyful news, it preserves those who remain, it protects the people, and thank God that they (Hamas) consented,” said Saoud Qarneyta, 32. “We are exhausted, I promise you, we are exhausted.”

Others, however, voiced caution, expressing doubts about whether Israel would honor the agreement.
“What’s crucial is that Netanyahu doesn’t undermine this, because now that Hamas has consented, Netanyahu will dissent, as he typically does,” said Jamal Shihada, a resident of Jerusalem.

Situation on the Ground

Despite the diplomatic progress, the Israeli military spokesperson in Arabic warned residents on Saturday that Gaza City remains a “dangerous” combat zone. He urged civilians to avoid traveling north or nearing any operational areas.

Meanwhile, U.S.-based Axios reported that the Israeli military could soon shift toward defensive operations and drop its long-standing objective of capturing Gaza City.

Israeli airstrikes persisted early Saturday, but the intensity appeared reduced following Trump’s direct request to halt bombardments, claiming Hamas had shown readiness for peace.
