Islamabad Court Rejects Plea to Cancel Warrants; Next Hearing on September 24 On Monday, a district and sessions court in Islamabad issued non-bailable arrest warrants for human rights lawyer Imaan Mazari and her husband Advocate Hadi Ali Chatha, in connection with an ongoing case involving allegedly controversial tweets that touch on national security and state institutions.
Court Denies Request to Cancel Warrants.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka ordered the couple to appear in court on September 24, rejecting a request filed by their lawyer to nullify the arrest warrants.
“The court noted that previous summons had already been delivered to both individuals.”
Despite the legal counsel’s efforts to stop the arrest orders, the court upheld its position and postponed the hearing until later this month.
Background: Prior Arrests and Ongoing Legal Troubles
This is not Imaan Mazari’s first encounter with law enforcement.
August 2023
Imaan and former lawmaker Ali Wazir were arrested in a sedition case by Islamabad police. Though she was granted bail after a week, she was re-arrested the same day outside Adiala Jail in connection with a separate terrorism case.
She was finally released on September 2, 2023, after an Islamabad anti-terrorism court granted her bail.
October 2024 Incident
Later, in October 2024, Imaan Mazari and her spouse were again detained, this time for allegedly interfering in governmental security measures.
Islamabad police claimed the couple posed a security threat by removing road barriers during the England cricket team’s tour.
A video that surfaced online on October 25, 2024, appeared to show Imaan and Hadi removing security barricades, reportedly to open a blocked route for vehicles.
What Comes Next?
The case now awaits its next major hearing on September 24, where both Imaan Mazari and Hadi Chatha have been legally compelled to appear in court. With mounting legal pressure and public scrutiny, the couple’s legal team is expected to respond with a robust defense strategy.
