Torrential rain hit various areas of Karachi on Sunday, with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) cautioning that the heavy showers might cause urban flooding in the city’s lower regions.
Light to heavy rainfall is being reported in Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Malir Halt, Rafa-e-Aam, Bahria Town, and nearby areas close to the M9 Motorway.
The Met Office reports that rain-laden clouds are now located above the eastern regions of the megacity. “It was mentioned that these clouds might extend further into the city,” it added.
The Met Office has cautioned that “uncommon rainfalls” are anticipated in Sindh over the next 48 hours.
It noted that the “depression” in southwest Rajasthan and Gujarat has intensified into a “deep depression”.
The Met Office stated that the “intense depression” is expected to reach southeastern Sindh in the next 24 hours. Due to the weather system, significant rainfall was anticipated in Tharparkar, Umarkot, and various other Sindh cities until September 10.
Karachi is forecasted to experience occasional intense rainfall along with thunderstorms and strong winds during this time, it stated.
In a warning released on Saturday, the National Weather Forecasting Centre indicated that rain, wind, and thundershowers are anticipated in Sindh and South Punjab, with heavy rainfall also probable in isolated areas of Sindh.
“A low-pressure area is presently situated over Rajasthan and is expected to shift towards the west.” “Monsoon currents are moving into Sindh and the eastern regions of Punjab, which are expected to strengthen,” it stated.
It also cautioned that heavy rainfall could lead to urban flooding in the low-lying regions of Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad, Tharparker, Khairpur, Sukkur, Larkana, Thatta, Badin, Sajawal, Hyderabad, and Karachi.
Increased rainfall in the flood-hit regions of Punjab could worsen the conditions throughout the forecast period, it noted.
