TEHRAN: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday called on Muslim nations to sever relations with Israel prior to a summit addressing an unprecedented Israeli attack on Hamas members in Qatar.
“Pezeshkian stated before leaving for Doha that Islamic countries might sever connections with this illegitimate regime and strive for unity and solidarity as much as they can, expressing hope that the summit would ‘come to a resolution’ on actions against Israel.”
Monday’s urgent meeting of Arab and Islamic leaders will demonstrate solidarity among Gulf nations and aim to increase pressure on Israel, which is already experiencing rising demands to halt the conflict and humanitarian disaster in Gaza.
Expected at Monday’s summit are Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas landed in Doha on Sunday.
As stated by the spokesperson for Qatar’s foreign ministry, Majed al-Ansari, the meeting on Monday will examine “a draft resolution concerning the Israeli assault on the State of Qatar.”
Türk Dışişleri Bakanı Hakan Fidan, Al Jazeera’ya verdiği demeçte, İsrail’in tutumunun “artık sadece bir Filistin-İsrail meselesi olmadığını” söyledi.
“The primary issue at the moment is Israeli expansionist policies in the area,” he stated.
“Arab and Islamic nations need to unite and seek a resolution based on this newly identified issue.”
Qatar is home to the largest American military installation in the area and serves an important mediating function in the Israel-Hamas conflict, working with the United States and Egypt.
Bassem Naim, a member of the Hamas politburo, stated that the group anticipated the summit would result in “a definitive and united Arab-Islamic stance.”
