Saiyaara has completed its international box office run, except in one country where it continues to generate revenue. The film’s ninth week will generate approximately USD 30K, with the majority originating from… Sri Lanka. The collections this week in Sri Lanka will actually exceed those in India.
The YRF musical romance, helmed by Mohit Suri, has earned USD 19.85 million (Rs. 172 crore) abroad, falling short of USD 20 million by a narrow margin. Starting with a modest opening day of USD 475K and an opening weekend of USD 2.10 million, the film has achieved an impressive multiple of almost 10x. With an amount of Rs. 396 crore from India included, the global total will conclude at Rs. 568 crores.
Saiyaara excelled generally, yet the United Kingdom and the Middle East are particularly notable among key markets. In the UK, it is the second-largest Indian movie ever, earning GBP 3.22 million, and in the Middle East, it became the highest-grossing non-Khan film to date. Additionally, there are lesser-known markets that have stood out from Nepal to the Netherlands and Norway, and notably, Sri Lanka. In Lanka, it ranks as the second-largest Bollywood movie ever, just after Jawan, which benefited from a well-known Tamil director.
International box office figures are typically influenced by star appeal, whether through well-known actors, a prominent director, or a popular franchise. Saiyaara possessed none of these. It showcased two entirely fresh faces and a director whose highest earnings abroad were just under USD 3 million. Movies of this kind have been very successful in India, but rarely find success overseas. At home, Saiyaara was a hit that diminished after ten days, but internationally, it became a long-run success, maintaining momentum week after week and achieving these impressive levels.
