Tamil cinema superstar and politician Thalapathy Vijay has announced financial support for the families affected by the tragic stampede that occurred during his Karur rally on Saturday. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder pledged ₹20 lakh each for the families of the deceased and ₹2 lakh each for those injured.
Tragic Loss of Lives in Karur
According to Indian media, 41 people tragically lost their lives in the incident, including 18 women, 13 men, five young girls, and five young boys. Another 56 individuals sustained injuries during the rally.
Police officials revealed that the rally was expected to attract around 10,000 people, but nearly 30,000 attendees gathered at the venue. The event was delayed for several hours under harsh weather conditions, leading to severe overcrowding and chaos.
Vijay’s Emotional Statement
Expressing his grief, Vijay said: “It is a loss for us that cannot be repaired. Regardless of who provides comfort, the pain of losing our loved ones is intolerable. Yet, as a part of your family, I plan to provide ₹20 lakh to each of the families mourning their loss and ₹2 lakh to those injured and under treatment.”
He added that while money could never replace the lives lost, he felt a deep responsibility to stand with the victims’ families during this tragic time.
State and Central Government Compensation
In addition to Vijay’s contribution, the Tamil Nadu government announced ₹10 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh for the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed condolences and pledged ₹2 lakh for each victim’s family and ₹50,000 for the injured.
The Karur tragedy has raised concerns over crowd management and safety measures at political rallies, as the sheer number of attendees far exceeded the arrangements in place.
