Sept 14: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in a statement late Friday that it has authorized Apple to implement a hypertension detection capability on select smartwatches.
Apple announced that the hypertension notification feature will be rolled out on Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, and the high-end Ultra 2 and Ultra 3 models by the end of September.
The function, anticipated to be launched in 150 countries and areas, such as the U.S. and EU, employs the optical heart sensor to assess blood vessel reactions to heartbeats.
Functioning in a passive manner, the algorithm examines data in 30-day intervals and notifies users when it identifies persistent indications of hypertension, as stated by Apple.
Nonetheless, the company indicated that the feature might not identify all instances of high blood pressure, yet it could notify around a million users.
Bloomberg News, which had earlier covered the story, indicated that Apple is set to launch the feature in smartwatches next week.
Apple did not reply to Reuters inquiries regarding the Bloomberg article
